House partially destroyed after being hit by lightning

Written by on 24/07/2021

A house in Hampshire has been partially destroyed after it was hit by lightning, the fire service has said.

The roof of the two-storey property in Andover was blown in after it was struck in a thunderstorm, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIOWFRS) said.

Smoke was pictured coming from the semi-detached home in Mercia Avenue, with firefighters urging people to avoid the area. It is not clear if anyone was injured in the incident.

Yellow thunderstorm warnings are in place for the entire south coast until midnight on Sunday.

It comes after a week of extreme heat for much of England and Wales, with temperatures exceeding 30C (86F).

Forecasters say the heatwave will be replaced by heavy rain, hail and gusts of wind over the weekend.
