It looks like Marvel fans could soon be seeing Spider-Woman on the big screen, with actress and director Olivia Wilde dropping a not-so-subtle hint about her upcoming superhero project.
The star confirmed the news she has closed a deal with Sony Pictures to direct and develop a film revolving around a female character, posting a simple spider emoji on Twitter.
She also shared this picture on Instagram.
Sony’s official Twitter feed gave Wilde‘s tweet a round of applause emoji back.
A number of female characters have taken on the Spider-Woman alter ego over the years, including the original Jessica Drew, as well as Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.
US entertainment site Deadline, which first reported the news, said the concept is being revamped by Wilde and it is not known which character the studio might go with.
While Spider-Woman has not been officially confirmed to make her big-screen debut, the Marvel project will definitely see Wilde reunite with Katie Silberman – who co-wrote the star’s directorial debut Booksmart, a 2019 coming-of-age comedy starring Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein.
Wilde wrote on Instagram: “Reunited and it feels so good, especially because we never left each other’s side in the first place @katierosesilberman.”
The star also responded to Frozen actor Josh Gad, who wrote on Twitter: “The fact that @oliviawilde is directing an @MarvelStudios film is enough to get though one more day.”
“It’s the least I could do in exchange for the gift of Olaf,” she replied.
Wilde’s former House co-star Hugh Laurie also congratulated her on the job, writing: “This is most excellent, O. May the road rise up to meet you!”
