Written by on 27/07/2021

Britain has won a bronze medal in the women’s team gymnastics at the Olympics for the first time since 1928.

Team GB leap-frogged Italy late on to secure third place in the all-around event.

The Russian Olympic Committee took gold over the United States after Simon Biles exited the competition due to a “medical issue”.

The Russian gymnasts posted a team score of 169.528, ahead of the US in second place at 166.096.

The gold is the first for the Russians since the Unified Team triumphed in Barcelona in 1992.

The withdrawal of Biles, one of the biggest names in gymnastics and winner of four golds and a bronze in Rio, was confirmed in a statement by the USA Gymnastics team.

Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”

Biles had qualified for the individual finals in every discipline, but it’s unclear if she’ll be able to compete.
