Woman says ‘teachers took no action over sex abuse rumours’

Written by on 04/12/2019

A woman has told a court how “not one teacher” intervened when rumours she was being abused began to circulate at school.

The victim was traded between men “like a piece of meat” and the sexual abuse began when she was a 12-year-old girl, a jury has heard.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect her identity, told Birmingham Crown Court she was forced to perform sex acts in a churchyard.

She also said she was raped on a dirty mattress above a shop, and violently abused when she tried to refuse the men’s advances.

The woman has also said she was urinated on by one of five men who are on trial.

The offences took place in Telford, Shropshire, the jury was told.

The prosecution has said the woman was sexually exploited until she was in her mid-teens.

Michelle Heeley QC, opening the case on Monday, alleged the victim was first sold for sex by a man named Tanveer Ahmed.

He “befriended her” during a low point in her life, the court heard.

Ahmed, who made takeaway deliveries for Perfect Pizza in Telford, is not on trial alongside the other defendants because he was deported to Pakistan for “unrelated offences”, the jury was told.

The victim claimed to have been taken to a flat above a Perfect Pizza shop “to have sex”, and “lost count” of the men she was forced to sleep with.

She said her family knew nothing at the time but added that “people at school” somehow found out through rumour.

The woman said in the video: “Even the teachers heard people saying these things and not one teacher pulled me to the side and asked me if things were all right.

“I was too scared to go and ask for help.

“But nobody said a word.”

The first defendant Mohammed Ali Sultan, 33, formerly of Telford, is alleged to have sold the girl for sex and abused her.

He is facing two charges of rape and three of indecent assault.

He already had convictions in both 2012 and 2015 for “similar offences against young girls”, the jury was told.

She told police that years after the abuse ended she recognised photos of two alleged attackers, Ali Sultan and Ahmed, from press reports on the “Telford sex ring” during the Operation Chalice investigation.

One of the other men on trial is Amjad Hussain, 38, from Telford, who is accused of forcing her to perform oral sex on two separate occasions.

Shafiq Younas, 35, from Wellington near Telford, is accused of orally raping the youngster in a churchyard in Wellington.

Nazam Akhtar, 35, also from Wellington, has been charged with rape which is said to have happened in the back of a car.

Mohammad Rizwan from Telford, who jurors heard also worked at Perfect Pizza and allegedly forced the girl to perform sex acts, is also on trial.

The 37-year-old, who will tell jurors that he had a consensual relationship with the victim when she was 17, faces two charges of indecent assault.

The men deny any wrongdoing and the trial continues.
